Sunset Horse Riding in Essaouira: Timing, Light and What to Expect

The sunset ride is the most requested horse experience in Essaouira, and its departure time is not fixed — it moves through the year with sunset itself. Essaouira faces due west into the Atlantic, so the sun sets over open water, which is the whole reason this ride exists. Published rate is 350 DH (€35) for roughly 1.5–2 hours.

When does the sunset ride actually leave?

It is scheduled backwards from sunset, so the departure shifts across the year. Broadly, sunset in Essaouira falls somewhere between roughly 17:30 in midwinter and around 20:30 in midsummer.

The ride is normally timed so you are on the beach for the last stretch of light rather than arriving after it. That usually means departing 1.5–2 hours before sunset.

Because the time moves — and because Morocco's clocks shift during Ramadan — always confirm the actual departure time for your specific date rather than working from a number you read online.

Why the tide matters as much as the time

A sunset that lands at high tide is a different ride from one that lands at low tide.

Low and mid tide expose a wide belt of firm, damp sand: more room, better footing, and the wet sand mirrors the sky, which is where the striking reflection shots come from. High tide narrows the rideable strip and leaves softer, deeper sand that is harder work for the horse.

Tide times shift daily, so the ideal slot moves independently of the sunset time. When you ask about availability, ask what the tide is doing too.

What the ride is like

The route runs from the stables in Diabat out onto the shoreline, with the Atlantic on one side and dunes on the other. As the sun drops, the light goes from hard and bright to low and warm over roughly forty minutes.

Pace is up to you. Beginners walk the whole way. Confident riders can trot or canter along the firm sand where conditions allow. Guides normally pause at viewpoints for photos, and the stretch after the sun touches the water — the blue hour — is often better for pictures than the sunset itself.

Sunset ride or daytime ride?

Both have a case.

• Sunset — best light, the signature experience, most photogenic, and the most requested slot, so it books out first
• Early morning — the calmest wind of the day and the quietest beach; better if you are nervous or want stillness
• Midday — strongest sun and, in summer, the strongest wind; generally the least comfortable

Practical points for an evening ride

• Bring a layer. Temperature drops noticeably once the sun is down, and the Atlantic wind makes it feel cooler
• Sunglasses still matter — low sun straight off the water is harsh right up until it sets
• Secure your phone in a zipped pocket; you will want it out, and sand is unforgiving
• Leave the evening open. The ride runs 1.5–2 hours plus travel each way
• Book ahead. This is the slot that fills first, particularly in spring and autumn

Best months for it

Spring and autumn generally give the most comfortable evenings: mild temperatures and less wind than midsummer. Summer sunsets are late, which suits some schedules and not others.
