Best Time to Go Horse Riding in Essaouira: Season, Wind and Tide Guide

Essaouira is rideable all year. Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are generally the most comfortable, combining mild temperatures with less wind than midsummer. Summer stays cooler than inland Morocco because of the Atlantic, but it is the windiest season. Winter is mild with the highest chance of rain.

Why Essaouira's weather is unlike inland Morocco

The Atlantic moderates everything. While Marrakech pushes well past 40°C in high summer, Essaouira stays substantially cooler — which is precisely why Moroccans travel there in August.

The trade-off is wind. The Alizés blow most reliably from spring through summer and are strongest in the afternoon. They are what built the town's windsurfing reputation, and they are the single biggest variable in what a ride feels like.

Season by season

Spring (March–May)

Mild temperatures, longer daylight than winter, and moderate wind. Countryside routes are at their greenest after winter rain, and the argan and eucalyptus trails inland are pleasant. Generally the best all-round window.

Summer (June–August)

Cooler than inland Morocco but the windiest period, with afternoon wind often strongest. Early morning is usually the calmest riding slot. Busiest season, so book further ahead.

Autumn (September–November)

Warm sea, settling wind, thinning crowds. Often the most comfortable riding of the year, with September and October particularly good.

Winter (December–February)

Mild by European standards and rideable, but this is the wet season and the days are short. Rain arrives in spells rather than continuously. Bring a layer — the wind feels colder off the water.

Morning or evening: which is better?

They are genuinely different rides.

• Early morning — calmest air, coolest temperatures, quietest beach. Best in summer and for nervous riders who want minimal wind.
• Late afternoon and sunset — warmer light, the classic Essaouira sunset over the Atlantic, and the reason the sunset ride at 350 DH (€35) is the most requested slot. Wind usually eases as the sun drops.
• Midday — strongest sun and, in summer, strong wind. Usually the least comfortable option.

Why tide matters more than most people expect

Beach riding depends on tide as much as weather. Low and mid tide expose the wide belt of firm, damp sand that is comfortable to ride on and safe for faster paces. At high tide the rideable strip narrows and the remaining sand is softer and deeper, which is harder work for the horse and limits the route.

Tide times shift daily, so a ride slot that works one day may not be the equivalent slot the next. This is the main reason published ride times move around.

What to ask before you book

Because conditions are date-specific, confirm rather than assume:

• What is the tide doing on my date, and which slot has the best beach?
• Is strong wind forecast, and is there a sheltered inland alternative?
• What time is sunset, and when would the sunset ride actually depart?
• What happens if the weather turns — is rescheduling possible?

If your dates are fixed, ask which slot on those days has the best combination of tide and wind. If your dates are flexible, spring and autumn will give you the widest choice.
