About This Ride
Few equestrian experiences on earth match the primal thrill of riding a horse straight into ocean waters. As the gentle Atlantic surf rises past the horse's knees and reaches its chest, you feel your mount lift into buoyant, rhythmic swimming strokes. Barb-Arabian horses are natural swimmers, using their powerful hindquarters while keeping their heads and nostrils high above the salty spray.
Because Essaouira is situated on the wild Atlantic coast, ocean safety is paramount. The coastline experiences significant semi-diurnal tidal shifts. Swimming with 450-kg horses requires intimate local knowledge of sandbar topography and tidal currents. Brahim checks daily maritime hydrographic charts, scheduling every swimming session strictly at optimal low-to-mid slack tides when sandbanks are shallow, wave heights are minimal, and undertows are nonexistent.
The 2-hour experience begins with a scenic ride from our Diabat stables, winding through coastal dunes down to a secluded beach bay sheltered from heavy open-ocean swell. Before entering the water, we adjust the horses' tack—frequently riding bareback with a soft neck ring or specialized water gear so the horses have total freedom across their withers and back. Riders wear swimwear under light shorts, wading into waist-to-chest-deep water before holding onto the mane as the horse swims.
Our horses are never forced into deep water; they enter eagerly and treat the ocean as an enjoyable, cooling play session after warm riding on the sand. The cool saltwater naturally soothes their muscles and tendons, providing a zero-impact workout. Deep water sessions last approximately 15 to 20 minutes to prevent fatigue, followed by a warm canter on the beach sand and a relaxing trail ride back to the stables.

Everything you need to know about booking, suitability, and riding with Brahim.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer to participate?
You do not need to be a competitive swimmer, but basic comfort in ocean water is required. While you float and hold onto the horse's mane or neck ring during swimming, you should be confident when the water reaches waist or chest depth. Our guide remains right beside you in the water at all times.
Why is swimming with horses strictly tide-dependent?
Essaouira's Atlantic tides fluctuate by up to 2.5 meters. At high tide, waves break steeper and currents can be stronger. For complete rider and horse safety, swimming is exclusively conducted during optimal tide windows when sandbars are flat, wave heights are minimal, and water entry is calm and predictable.
What months of the year can you swim with horses in Essaouira?
Swimming is most popular from May through October when water and air temperatures are warmest. However, pleasant swimming sessions can occur year-round whenever sunny days and gentle ocean swells align. If ocean conditions on your chosen day are rough, Brahim will notify you in advance to reschedule or adapt the route.
Is swimming in the sea safe and comfortable for the horses?
Yes, horses are natural swimmers and love the cooling relief of the sea water, particularly after warm exercise. Saltwater is famously therapeutic for horses' legs and tendons, and swimming provides an excellent non-weight-bearing workout. Sessions in deep water are kept moderate (15–20 minutes) so the horses remain relaxed and happy.
