About This Ride

For riders seeking more than a standard one-hour beach loop, our 3.5-hour half-day horse trek offers an authentic expedition into the wild landscapes of southwestern Morocco. Setting out south from Diabat along the historic Oued Ksob basin, we leave paved roads and tourist crowds behind, climbing along ancient shepherd paths into the rolling hills and sun-drenched valleys of the Essaouira countryside.

This route winds through the UNESCO-recognized Argan Biosphere Reserve, one of the most unique botanical zones on the planet. Here, ancient Argania spinosa trees with twisted, gnarled trunks grow wild across limestone ridges. The trail is framed by wild thyme, sage, and towering eucalyptus trees planted decades ago to anchor shifting sands. You will pass secluded Berber hamlets where local shepherds tend flocks of sheep and goats, experiencing a tranquil side of Morocco rarely seen by coastal day-trippers.

Halfway through our trek, we dismount at a shaded, panoramic vantage point overlooking the crashing Atlantic Ocean. While our Barb-Arabian horses rest, graze, and cool down, we share freshly brewed Moroccan mint tea infused with fresh garden herbs, served with traditional Moroccan almond pastries. This 20-minute pause allows riders to stretch, chat with Brahim, and capture stunning photos of the sweeping countryside.

The grand finale of the trek leads down through monumental wind-sculpted sand dunes straight onto the expansive Atlantic beach. With kilometers of wide, hard-packed sand and the ocean surf breaking at the horses' feet, riders have unlimited space to enjoy extended trotting or exhilarating canters. We conclude with a relaxing walking cooldown as the horses take in the cooling coastal sea breeze back to Diabat ranch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about booking, suitability, and riding with Brahim.

Do I need to be an expert equestrian for the 3.5-hour trek?

Not at all. While 3.5 hours requires reasonable physical fitness and comfort spending several hours outdoors, beginners with active lifestyles regularly complete and love this trek. Our Barb-Arabian horses are remarkably calm and sure-footed, and the route includes a relaxing 20–25 minute tea break halfway through.

What kind of horses do you use for extended trekking?

We ride pure and cross Barb-Arabian horses native to Morocco. Celebrated for centuries for their remarkable stamina, gentle temperament, and agility over rocky and sandy terrain, they are the ideal companions for long-distance coastal treks.

What happens if the weather is windy or foggy?

Essaouira is famous for coastal trade winds. A major advantage of this 3.5-hour trek is that more than half the ride takes place in sheltered inland Argan valleys, naturally protected by hills and dense tree cover. If extreme ocean weather makes riding unsafe, you can reschedule freely or cancel with zero fee.

Can experienced riders gallop on the beach during the trek?

Yes! The final stretch along the Atlantic shoreline offers several kilometers of flat, hard-packed sand at low tide. For riders with proven balance and canter experience, Brahim provides ample opportunity for spirited canters and gallops while keeping beginners safely accompanied at a walk.
